Every single day we are faced with choices; whether to get up when the alarm sounds or to snooze for a few more minutes, what to wear, which route to follow to work or school, I mean every single deed is dependant upon a decision we make. Some of our actions become routine hence whether doing them or not is straight forward. Albeit, in some instances, we are likely to seek counsel before making certain decisions. Considering all our undertakings are pegged on a decision, the question remains what influences our decisions? Decisions spring from the principles governing an individual. If this is the case, then concern should be on the principles we uphold.
Below are some reasons why God gives specific principles for Christian living:
A. Are for our own good always.
Deuteronomy 6:24 Amplified Bible (AMP)
24 So the Lord commanded us to do all these statutes, to fear [and worship] the Lord our God [with awe-filled reverence and profound respect] for our good always and so that He might preserve us alive, as it is today.
God is loving and gracious to His children. He is concerned about their well being.
B. Sets a safeguard from sin.
Psalms 119:11 Amplified Bible (AMP)
Your word I have treasured and stored in my heart, That I may not sin against You.
God gives us the principles for living a godly life to protect us from falling for the enticement of sin which separates us from Him.
C. Show us how to follow in Christ’s footsteps.
1 Peter 2:21 Amplified Bible (AMP)
21 For [as a believer] you have been called for this purpose, since Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you may follow in His footsteps.
Christ is our example. That is why we are called Christians (Acts 11:26), followers of Christ. It is from Him that we receive principles for Christian living. Not only from His Words but also from the life He led on earth.
D. Brings true happiness.
John 13:17 Amplified Bible (AMP)
17 If you know these things, you are blessed [happy and favored by God] if you put them into practice [and faithfully do them].
We can only be truly happy if we live in accordance with God’s will for us. It is what we practice of God’s word that brings blessings to us and others.
E. It gives us an opportunity to express our love for Him.
John 15:10 Amplified Bible (AMP)
10 If you keep My commandments and obey My teaching, you will remain in My love, just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and remain in His love.
Our expression of love for God is through obedience (John 14:15). When we abide in Christ, our prayers are effective, we glorify God in our fruit-bearing, we demonstrate our discipleship and our joy becomes full through experiencing Christ’s own joy within us.
F. It helps us to be examples to others.
1 Corinthians 11:1 Amplified Bible (AMP)
11 Imitate me, just as I imitate Christ.
It is only through following the example of Christ that we can be good examples to the world. We have been called to be the salt and the light of the world (Matt 5:13-16), Let our light shine before men in such a way that they may see our good deeds and recognize, honor and glorify our Father who is in heaven.
