In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God (John 1:1). This verse reminds me of (Genesis 1:1). God existed before the creation of the earth. When God created the earth, it was formless and void or a waste and emptiness, darkness was upon the face of the deep primeval ocean that covered the unformed earth. God said “let there be light” ; and there was light (Genesis 1:2-3). This will form the basis of this article.
From the first three verses of Genesis chapter one we get to observe a few things;
- God existed before the creation of the earth.
- The earth was formless, void and full of darkness.
- God spoke light into existence. It is through the Word that light comes into existence. In (John 1:1) this Word is Christ.
Now, this next verse really spoke to my heart; (Genesis 1:4) ‘and God saw that the light was good [pleasing, useful] and He affirmed and sustained it; and God separated the light [ distinguishing it] from the darkness.’ What do you notice from the verse? It is the first time we encounter the word ‘good’ in the bible, secondly, God affirms and sustains this light which He acknowledges as good. Then He separates this light from darkness. Remember when we first encountered the word darkness the Scripture doesn’t tell us it was good; we are not also told that God created darkness. If it were so, of course that detail would not have been left out. Instead we see God separating what is good from what is not good.
Notice that before God began developing and designing the earth that He had created and before He introduced life, He first separated light from darkness. This is so important to note. God’s agenda was to bring light into the earth through the Word (Jesus). Now hold on to that thought as I take you to (Isaiah 14:12-17) where the scripture talks about a being who had pride in his heart and wanted to take the place of God. From verses 13-17 we get to see this evidently. This was the first instance of sin. In (Ezekiel 28:11-19) we get to see a mighty angelic being who was rightfully judged by God. This being is lucifer. He apparently became so impressed with his own beauty, intelligence, power and position that He began to desire for himself the honor and glory that belonged to God alone. (Ezekiel 28:18) ‘I threw you to the earth’. Now through lucifer, darkness came to the earth. With this knowledge in mind then verse 2 of Genesis 1 makes much sense. And it is for this reason that God, through Christ had to bring light to the world.
God being all knowing, One who sees the end from the beginning (Isaiah 46:10) foresaw humanity being corrupted by lucifer. This indeed doesn’t take long to happen, in chapter 3 of Genesis, we get to see this come true. “and the serpent (satan) said to the woman, ‘you will certainly not die! For God knows that on the day you eat from it your eyes will be opened and you will be like God…” so, the woman took the fruit and ate it and gave some to her husband with her and he ate. When you look at the words that lucifer tells Eve, they are similar to what we saw in (Isaiah 14:13-14). The desire to take the place of God. So, through one man, sin entered the world (Romans 5:12), this darkness that had filled the face of the earth in (Genesis 1:2). Darkness causes blindness, just like when we walk in the dark we knock our feet on anything that is in front of us for we cannot see, so is the life of one who has no light (Jesus). Paul the apostle gives us a glimpse of this ‘darkness’ in (Ephesians 2:1-3). I’ll quote ‘and you were dead and separated from Him because of your transgressions and sins in which you once walked. You were following the ways of the world in accordance with the prince of the power of the air (satan), the spirit at work in the disobedient who fight against the purposes of God. Among these we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, indulging the desires of human nature [without the Holy Spirit] and the impulses of the sinful mind…’
Now that we have briefly looked at the darkness, how it came on earth and its effect to humanity, We will get to look at the Light in depth in the next part of LIGHT AND DARKNESS. Shalom.
